Hong
Kong International Airport (IATA: HKG, ICAO: VHHH) is the main airport in Hong Kong
airport, built on reclaimed land on the island of Chek Lap Kok.

airport is also known as Chek Lap Kok International Airport or
Chek Lap Kok Airport, to distinguish it from its predecessor, the first
Kai Tak Airport.
By having
in commercial operation since 1998, Chek Lap Kok Airport is a
important regional transshipment center, passenger hub and gateway to
destinations in China (with 45 destinations) and the rest of Asia.

airport is the busiest cargo portal in the world and one of the
busiest passenger airports. It is also home to one of the biggest
largest passenger terminal buildings (the largest when opened in 1998).

the airport is operated by the Airport Authority Hong Kong 24 hours a day
and is the main hub of Cathay Pacific (Hong's flag carrier
Kong), Cathay Dragon, Hong Kong Airlines, HK Express and Air Hong Kong
(cargo carrier).

airport is one of the centers of the Oneworld alliance, and also one of the
Asia-Pacific cargo centers for UPS Airlines. It is a focus city for many
airlines including China Airlines and China Eastern Airlines.
Singapore Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines and Air India use Hong Kong as a stopover for their flights.
HKIA is a major contributor to Hong Kong's economy, with approximately 65,000 employees.
More
more than 100 airlines operate flights from the airport to more than 180 cities
all around the world. In 2015, HKIA handled 68.5 million passengers, making it
is the 8th busiest airport in the world in terms of passenger traffic and the 3rd
world's busiest airport in international passenger traffic.
Since 2010, it has also surpassed Memphis International Airport to become the world's busiest airport by cargo traffic.
The airport is managed and operated by the Airport Authority Hong Kong (AA), which was established on 1 December 1995.
To
facilitate the increased traffic due to the third runway, Terminal 2 is
currently under maintenance of adding a departures and arrivals section
with immigration and will not be reopening until at least 2024.
